Patrick Hamilton – Ryan McNally Band

Patrick Hamilton has been steeped in bluegrass and oldtime music his entire life. Born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon, he’s been playing clawhammer banjo since he was twelve years old and spent his teen years playing and touring with his family band. Inspired by his love for vintage country music, early jazz, and Appalachian oldtime music, Patrick performs professionally both as a solo act and with a variety of projects spanning many musical genres and has even added tenor banjo to his arsenal.

Patrick has performed nationally and internationally as a part of the Done Gone Stringband, and has accompanied many performers such as local bluesman Ryan McNally, as well as Riley Baugus, and Foghorn Stringband.

Beginner/Intermediate Clawhammer Style Banjo

The goal of this class is to solidify basic claw hammer banjo techniques, learn old-time repertoire, explore ways to accompany and jam with other musicians and to have fun! We will work on techniques such as the “bum-ditty” and “drop thumbing”, as well as the use of slides, hammer-ons and pull-offs to catch melody notes and create rhythmic variation. Students will learn a collection of old-time tunes, including a few in some less common tunings, as well as chord shapes and ideas for accompaniment. We will also discuss the history of the banjo and get an idea of some nuisances from select regional styles.

Prerequisite
Students should know how the banjo is strung and how to tune it. Students should also be familiar with the difference between banjo played bluegrass style with finger picks and banjo played using clawhammer technique.
