Olivier de Columbel & Brigitte Desjardins – Ryan McNally Band

Olivier de Colombel started playing the saxophone at 11 years old and guitar at 14, in the south of France. After saxophone classical studies, he turned his interests towards jazz, composition, arrangement, improvisation and studied in Paris. He’s influenced by music styles such as classical, Indian, bluegrass, folk and old time music in general. Olivier played saxophone for 12 years with different bands in Paris, and studied musical therapy at the Université René Descartes Paris V. He worked with children with disabilities for 5 years. In 2014 he moved to the Yukon looking for new musical and artistic adventures. He is now teaching music theory, saxophone, French language, and organizes music workshops for kids in Whitehorse, playing and working often with Yukon musicians, Ryan McNally and Brigitte Desjardins.

Brigitte Desjardins started playing percussion at 11 years old and grew up in a very musical family. Since then, she’s been involved in many different musical styles; folk, classical, rock, blues, jazz, old-time, and cajun. Throughout her life, she has always been dedicated to her craft as a percussionist and since she moved to the Yukon, she strives to take her musical skills further. In 2015 she received the Advanced Artist Award from the Yukon Department of Tourism and Culture to study traditional jazz in New-Orleans. Brigitte also focuses her work on children’s music in many different ways; she collaborates with Claire Ness doing children’s performances, tours Yukon community schools to offer music workshops to students, teaches in the after-school music program at Émilie-Tremblay school with Olivier de Colombel, and offers drum kit and washboard private lessons for kids… Brigitte loves supporting children in their musical learning.

In this class students will explore music through the use of rhythm, art, dance, play, singing and songwriting. Try an array of musical instruments, make homemade ones too, and go on musical treasure hunts. Children will visit the various classes held around the site and have a great time being introduced to the bluegrass and old time music genres.
