Ryan McNally

McNally was raised in rural Quebec, south of Montreal along the U.S. border. He began pursuing music at the age of ten when he first picked up the guitar. In his late teens and early twenties he would seek out musicians he would hear at cafes and bars for lessons in finger style blues. Whether he’s playing with his own solo band or other various outfits, he can’t be kept off Canadian stages. Ryan puts most of his energy in his passion for studying acoustic traditional blues, jazz and old time music. Currently McNally is experimenting with scoring music to films as well as musical direction for theater, all while keeping up a busy solo career and a steady touring schedule.

Intermediate Fingerstyle Guitar
The class will first focus on the foundations of fingerstyle guitar, working on how to get good rhythm and tone using proper technique. We will spend time exploring and discussing the different styles and applications of finger style guitar, such as that of Doc Watson, Merle Travis and Mississippi John Hurt.

Students should be at an intermediate level in guitar and beginning to practice (with thumbpick and a metronome) alternating bass thumb picking. Recommended picks to bring are either 3 plastic picks or a plastic pick for the thumb and metal for the first 2 fingers…. but just a thumb pick is also fine.
